How to Download and Install Windows 11 for Free (Official Method)
Many people don't realise this, but the Windows 11 installation file (ISO) is completely free to download directly from Microsoft. What You'll Need
Before starting, prepare the following: a USB flash drive with at least 8GB of free space (all data will be erased), a stable internet connection for the download (the ISO is approximately 5.3GB), a valid Windows 11 product key for activation, and 20–40 minutes of time for the installation. The USB drive can be reused after installation, so use one you don't mind temporarily wiping.
Step 1: Download the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool
Go to microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11. Microsoft provides two main options: the Media Creation Tool (recommended — automatically creates a bootable USB) and a direct ISO download. For most users, the Media Creation Tool is the easier path. Download and run it — you don't need to install it.
Step 2: Create a Bootable USB with the Media Creation Tool
After launching the Media Creation Tool: accept the licence terms, select "Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file)" and click Next. Select your language and edition (Windows 11 — 64-bit is almost certainly correct for modern hardware). Choose "USB flash drive" as the media type. Select your USB drive from the list — double check it's the right one as all data will be erased. Click Next and wait. The tool will download Windows 11 and write it to the USB automatically. This takes 20–40 minutes depending on your internet speed.
Back Up Your Data Before Proceeding
A clean install erases everything on the drive you install to. Before continuing, back up all important documents, photos, downloads and any other data to an external drive or cloud storage. This step cannot be undone.
Step 3: Boot from the USB Drive
With your bootable USB ready, restart your PC. You need to tell the PC to boot from the USB rather than your hard drive. During startup (before Windows loads), press the boot menu key — this is typically F12 on most PCs, F8 on some, or Escape on others. Check your PC manufacturer's website if unsure. A boot menu will appear listing available devices — select your USB drive and press Enter. The Windows Setup screen should appear.
Step 4: Install Windows 11
The Windows Setup wizard guides you through the installation. Key decisions: select your language, time format and keyboard layout, then click "Install now". When asked for a product key, you can enter it here or click "I don't have a product key" to activate later (recommended — easier to enter from within Windows). Choose "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)" for a clean install. Select the drive/partition to install on. Windows will copy files, install features and updates, and restart several times — this typically takes 15–25 minutes.
Step 5: Complete the Windows 11 Setup (OOBE)
After installation, Windows runs the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) — the initial setup screens. You'll choose region, keyboard layout, connect to Wi-Fi, and set up a user account. Windows 11 Home requires a Microsoft account during setup; Windows 11 Pro allows local accounts. Once desktop appears, your clean Windows 11 installation is complete.
Step 6: Activate Windows 11
If you skipped the key during setup, activate now: Settings → System → Activation → Change product key. Enter your 25-character key, click Next, and Windows contacts Microsoft's servers to verify and activate.
